Theresa C. Frey

I have found very little about Theresa.

I learned she was born December 15, 1903.  Not where or who her parents may be.  It appears she was not married.  1942 shows her living in Buffalo, New York.  She was a Btog Madi Opr.  I have no idea what that job is.  In 1957 Teresa was a Tab Mech Opr dept of social welfare.  She lived in Kenmore, New York.

She was buried at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Saint Marys, Elk County, Pennsylvania.

Kathleen Niklas Kassel

img20190324_21220019

On March 2, 1915 Kathleen was born to Joseph 24 and Elizabeth 22 Nicklas.  They lived with her grandfather Joseph Keiser 60 and her mothers siblings: John 19, George 19, and Simon 14.  They lived at 345 Bissell Ave on Buffalo’s east side but more toward the German section than Polonia.  This is yet another property that is reduced to an empty lot.

In 1925 Kathy lived with her parents and younger brother Joseph 3 with her maternal grandfather.

On June 22, 1835 she married Clifford J. Kassel in Buffalo, New York.  Five years later she was a beautician.  She and Clifford were living with her mother in law Katherine Kassel 56 and two of Clifford’s siblings; Marion 23 and Kenneth 25.

Kathleen ran a beauty salon at 34 Roetzer in 1941.

I don’t have anything after this until her death in 2001.  She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, East Aurora, Erie County, New York.

This is the kitchen at 18 Newton St..  That is my great Aunt Frances Switkowski Surdyk.  She made me a cake every year at Easter until my teens.  After this cake they were standing lamb cakes.  Later she taught me how to play poker.

Irene Nietopski Jarnot

img20190324_21225712

On August 24, 1908 a girl was born to John 36 and Martha Nietopski 26 in Buffalo, New York.  They named her Irene.

In 1910 the Nietopski family lived at 147 Mohr Avenue on Buffalo’s East Side.  The children included were: Martha  6, Harry 5, Edmund 4, Irene 1, and newborn Eugenia 0.

At age 11 Irene was living on Gittere St about six blocks away from her home on Mohr Avenue Ten years earlier.  She was attending school and was able to speak English.  New siblings in the family included: Kazmiera 7, Henry 5, Mary 3, and Karol 1.  She ended up with a sixth grade education so 1920 may have been her last year of school.

In 1925 her eldest sister was no longer living with the family.

Irene was a machine hand at a silk mill in 1930.  The parents and eight children were still living in the small home on Gittere Street.  That home is now an empty field as most of the Polish east side has been abandoned and torn down.

In 1940 at age 32 Irene was still living with her family.  The family was her parents, three siblings and one nephew.  This nephew was the son of her sister Martha who married John Surdyk.  Here is a solid connection to my family.  John’s brother Joseph married my grandmother’s sister Frances.  On August 31, 1940 Irene married Leo Jarnot in Buffalo, New York.  They moved to 107 Warren Avenue.  Leo worked at the Curtiss airplane company near the northern suburb of Kenmore.

I don’t have any other information on Irene between her marriage and death.  I did not locate any children.

Snyder/Gang

Previously, I did a profile on Sarah and Joseph Gang.  This is an update on their daughter Susan and her husband William Henry Snyder.  These are my 2nd great grandparents.

Susan C. Gang was born in 1879 in Fairfield, Ohio.  A year later she was in Walnut, Ohio with parents Joseph and Sarah, and her adopted older brother Wilkison Reed.

Next we jump 20 years to find Susan married to William Snyder.  They are living on Perry Street in Lancaster, Ohio with Ella Marie age 1.  Susan and William married in 1896 when Susan was 17.  This is the first record I find of William, he was born around 1869 so he is about 10 years older than Susan.  Census records say by 1900 Susan birthed two children but only had one living.

By 1910 the couple is still on Perry Street in Lancaster, Ohio.  William is working as a framer in the oil industry.  Susan is a laundress.  The past decade has been busy for them and they have seven children living with them: Marie 10, Maude 9, Edna 7, Ruth 5, Ida 3, Clarence 0, and an unnamed newborn daughter.

Sometime during the 1910a the family moved to McNeil Street in Lancaster, Ohio.  So now in 1920 William is now a teamster working at a cement company.  Marie has moved out but the family is now nine children in the home.  They have ten living children out of eleven born.  Susan is too busy at running the household to work outside of the home.  Maud 21 is a utility girl at a shoe factory, sister Edna 19 is a lacer.  The rest of the children are: Ruth 16, Ida  13, Clarence  11, Hazel  9 (the unnamed daughter from the last census), Raymond Snyder 8, Lucile Snyder 6, and Eugene Snyder age two months.

Here we are in 1930 and there are some changes to the family.  William is now a laborer on a road crew.  Clarence 21, Raymond 18, and Eugene 10 are all working at a shoe factory.  Eugene was also going to school.  Maude 29 and her husband Coughran Mcclenaghan 33 lived with the family and worked at the shoe factory.  Their border Daniel Graham 20 worked at the glass factory.

Before the next census William died.  December 20, 1939 was his last day.  He was buried at the Forest Rose Cemetery in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, PLOT Section L.  In 1940 Susan is a widow living with her son Eugene 20.  He is a truck driver for a grocery store.

I have no other information from 1940 to 1959.  Susan was at Lancaster-Fairfield Hospital on March 31, 1959 when she died.  She is buried with William.
