Alexander S. Pajak

Preview(opens in a new tab)

Alexander Pajak was born in Cheektowaga, NY in late 1919 to Frank and Alice. At the time he was the youngest sibling to John 11, Joseph 9 Stephen 6, Edward 4, and Rudolph 3. The family stayed the same 5 years later, no one left and no new siblings.

In 1930 they lived at 91 Warsaw St. in Cheektowaga, NY. Oldest John is no longer with the family. Ten years later Alexander was still living with his parents. Stephen, Edward, and Rudolph are also living with them at 91 Warsaw St. The census doesn’t list him as working at the time it was filled out. He had worked not worked for 115 days. He was 21 with a 7th grade education. A lot has changed since the 1940s.

On October 16, 1940 he registered for the draft. He was 5’3″ and 130 pounds. On June 23, 1941 Alexander enlisted in the navy. His occupation is listed as carpenter and he lost 2 pounds. In August of 1944 he caught a cold. After 3 years and 2 months of working in a coast artillery Anti-Aircraft units he was admitted to the infirmary for a cold and released soon after. I did not find a discharge date.

Alexander was back in Buffalo and married Lottie Bialek on February 12, 1947.

Sadly after this I could find no more records until his death in March 1994.

Henry Wozniak

The first time I find a record of Henry Wozniak is the 1915 New York State Census. He was born in Buffalo, NY, 2 years old living with his parents; Steffen, 26 and Scholastica (nee Wroblewska) 24.

In 1920 Henry’s parents went by Stephen and Agnes. They were living on Clark Street in Buffalo’s east side with Henry and younger son Edmund. Bothe parents are listed as born in New York. This was unusual for the that generation as many Poles were coming to the US at the end of the 19th century. In 1925 Daughter Anna was listed as a 2 year old daughter.

Sometime before 1930 the family moved out of Buffalo to the eastern suburb of Cheektowaga. The now family of 6 lived at 30 Olcott Street. Henry has a new sibling Richard 4 listed in the 1930 Census. Henry, 16 worked as an assembler at a jewelry company.

On June 18, 1938 Henry married Salomea Brzozowska in Buffalo, New York. I didn’t find a location but based on living in the east side it will probably be in one of the Catholic Churches like St. Stanislaus or Corpus Christi.

I can’t locate the family on the 1940 US Census but in October 1940 Henry registered for the draft. He was 5 foot 9 inches with blue eyes and brown hair.

In 1953 the couple was living at 78 Quincy St., he was a factory worker. There isn’t much available after this but Salomea “Sally” died in 1992. No records of any children were found either. Nine years later Henry joined his wife in death.

Lucinda Alice McLaughlin

Going backward from the last McLaughlin post brings me to Lucinda Alice McLaughlin Noice, my 2nd great grandmother.

The first record where I find Lucinda Alice is the 1860 US Census. Alice is listed as 2 years old and born in Pleasant, Ohio in the county of Fairfield. Her parents are Samuel McLaughlin 34 and Sarah Ann Emfield 32. She was an only child at the time.

Ten years later in 1870 Alice is 12 and the oldest of 3; her siblings were Cassius 9 and Nancy 8. They were still living in Pleasant, Ohio in Lancaster County. The family had a Domestic Servant, Amanda Fry 35, living with them. In 1880 Alice would be working as a live in domestic for the Shurman family

Of course the 1890 US Census is the one I need. In the time between 1880 and 1900 Alice did a lot of living. She was now married to George Noice, they were living at 232 West Mill St in Lancaster, Ohio. She was married 18 years with 8 children; Carrie 16, Perry 15 Elmer 13, Franklin 11, Della 9, Lewis 8, William 6, and Flo 1. He father, Samuel McLaughlin, is listed as born in Virginia.

The 1910 US Census has some different information. It lists her father as born in Ohio. It also says she had 8 children and all 8 lived. Of those 8, 3 were still living at home on Refugee Road. They were Lewis 18, William 16, and Flo 11.

By 1920 Alice was a grandmother. She and George were living in Fairfield, Ohio with daughter Flo North and her 2 children; Max 1 and infant Charles. This census again lists her father as born in Virginia. Flo’s husband is not in the census, most likely based on the year and probable age he would be in WWI. I was able to find his name is Gail.

1930 found George and Alice were back in Pleasant, Ohio living on a farm on Pleasantville Road. Flo and her children were living with George and Alice. They now numbered 4; Max C North 11, Charles G North 10, Betty J North 8, and Armaletta North 6.

In 1932 George and Alice finally had a home to themselves. They were at 405 O’gara Avenue in Lancaster Ohio. They were still there in 1940. 2 years later on February 25, 1942 Alice left George alone for the next couple years.

The next McLaughlin post will be on Alice’s father Samuel.
