This week’s prayer car has a sad ending. Sadder than most since they all end with someone’s death.
Leokadya Ozdych was born in 1908 in Buffalo, NY. Her parents were Anthony and Agnes Oydejch, both were born in Buffalo. In 1915 she was the only daughter and oldest of 3 children. Her siblings were Edmund 5 and Florian 2. They were living on Detroit Street near St. Stanislaus Church. Five years later siblings Susan 2 and new born Stella were added to the family giving Leokadya sisters.
Leokadya began going by Laura as she got older. In 1925 a new sibling Dorothy 3 was a new addition to the family. One year later at age 18 Laura married Joseph Kurowski on August 18 1926. In 1930 Laura had a 2 year old daughter Florence. Joseph, Laura, and Florence lived at 211 Titus Avenue. The home is in an area that has seen better days and has many empty fields that were once homes.
Her son Eugene was born February 1933. Laura died February 9, 1933. Eugene died March 1933. Both are buried in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Stanislava and Jozef were also born in Germany.
Just a few years later on Nov 20, 1906 Her mom Jozefa died. I don’t have details on the death but it must have quite difficult for the family. In 1910 the family was living on Warren Avenue in Buffalo’s east side known as Polonia. Stanislava was no longer living with the family, she married Frank Losawski. In 1915 Pelagia now 18 was living with her sister Stanislawa’s family. This included husband Frank and children Edward 7 and Bronislawa 2.
Pelagia’s married Joseph Musielak in 1917 and the lived at 171 Woltz Avenue. Three years later on January 25, 1920 daughter Florence Agnes was born. In 1925 Pelegia and Joseph were living with his family. Vincent her father in law and Chester her brother in law shared the home.
Daniel Raymond was born to Pelegia on April 2, 1933. Three short years later just as her mom died with small children so did Pelegia leave her family in 1936.

My search found almost nothing on Josephine. There is another Josephine Piatek that died a week later in Ohio and was about the same age. She had more information but enough to show they were not the same people.
I was able to find she was married to Anthony F Piatek a sweeper at General Mills. They lived in Sloan, New York nestled between the east of Buffalo and Cheektowaga around the Norfolk Western rail lines.

Jozefa “Josephine” Pomarzynski was born in Germany around 1859. It was probably in the partitioned area of what was Poland. I had difficulty finding records for Josephine prior to her arrival in the US.
She immigrated to the US in 1881. This means I have few records for her first 19 years easily available. I haven’t found her in 1900 so this week there is not as much information as I would hope for. I found a family tree on MyHeritage that showed her maiden name was Okoniewski but I did not see a source.
In 1910 at the age of 50 She was widowed living wither son’s family. The were Joseph
34 and his wife Waleria 33, and their children Peter 4, Gertrude 3, and Stella 1.
Ten years later in 1920 she aged 17 years. He daughter in law had died January 10, 1911. In 1921 she was living at 1150 Broadway. This is now an empty field 3 blocks from where I grew up.
Four years later. April 12, 1925 Jozefa “Josephine” Pomarzynski died. She was buried at Saint John’s Cemetery in Boston, Erie County, New York.
